Sha Sha Sha 1 2 3

Very soon you might to see a major increase in website security warnings, especially if you use Google Chrome as your default browser. In a recent blog post Google announced they were going to take major steps to improve security across the internet. Websites, especially e-commerce websites use encryption to make sure all private information is secure. Many websites use SHA-1 as part of the encryption process. In 2009 it was discovered that SHA-1 had some issues. The more secure SHA-2 has been available for a number of years now and yet to this day SHA-1 is still used on numerous websites. SHA-3 is currently in development and not used on any websites yet.

Starting in September websites using SHA-1 will have a yellow triangle warning symbol over the secure icon next to the domain name, when viewed in Google Chrome.
In November the warning will lose the secure lock icon and instead be neutral icon.
Then in the first quarter of 2015 the icon will again change to the unsecure icon.
This does not mean that these websites are less secure than before the warnings levels changed. Google just wants to make you more aware of a possible issue before it really becomes a major problem. Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are taking similar steps, however on a much slower timeline. With this announcement from Google they might step up their timeline.
All websites on our TRECpro servers with encryption use SHA-2. To check if a website is using SHA-1 or SHA-2 use the following website:

Networking & the Local Chamber of Commerce

Networking is important to the success of your business as it is a powerful tool for building relationships that can have a tremendous impact.
Networking is defined as “a supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest.” (
Word of mouth, advice, and business opportunities are some benefits of networking with other local businesses. Websites and online groups are great avenues to get in touch with others as well, but don't underestimate the power of making those contacts face to face.
Take time to meet and greet, to shake hands and get to know your fellow businessman.  You will find there are few advertisements that will beat out a personal and professional reference. Networking is something that takes time (that you may not feel you can afford) out of your busy schedule, however most often the return is huge.
Your first stop should be the local chamber of commerce. It is important to note that your local chamber is not the same organization as the US Chamber which is more of a political group than a true representation of individual businesses. Not all networking or referral groups will be the perfect fit for your business. The same applies to local chambers of commerce. Often these groups will change dramatically in short periods of time, so it is really worth your time to check in every so often to see whats up. Recently I revisited the local chamber in my hometown and was pleasantly surprised. As a result I have joined the chamber and am looking forward to a great year with them. Also remember there is nothing that prevents you from joining multiple chambers in neighboring communities. Guard your time carefully and choose a couple of places to network. The time invested is well worth the effort.
